American pronunciation Semi vs H...
It's like the "toe mate oh" " toe mar toe" thing when pronouncing the word "tomato".
I agree that there doesn't seem to be a lot of logic behind saying "Semi" and "Hemi" differently though.
I can't really talk because us Kiwis cop all sorts of flak for our pronunciation of various words...particularly by you Australians!

Whats the worlds longest beach a...
There's a 90 mile beach here in New Zealand. I'm not sure on whether it is interrupted at any point along it though. But 90 miles.. that would beat your 75'er :)
