Well there is an established process that we go through every time we select a new president ...from actually selecting the nominees...which is lengthy as it is. Then having the whole campaigning process that the selected candidates go through up to the actual election.
I agree it takes far too long. It perhaps has something to do with the large number of states we have, and the need to cover so many people across so much area requires time.
