Can I use a Wireless G router with my old wifi card

Details

I'm thinking of getting a Linksys Wireless G Broadband Router but I don't have a wireless G card in my notebook. I have a Dell XPS M1710 I want to use it with.

Can someone tell me if this router is backwards compatible with my notebook and it's card?

You can set the router to "mixed mode" where it can operate at multiple wireless speeds - "wireless B" for instance.

However, checking the specs on your Dell - it supports 802.11g so you should be able to talk at wireless G speeds anyway. You don't need an extra card for this.

I use a wireless G router with my "B" equipped laptop, and it works fine no problem.

Don't worry George, the wireless G routers like that Linksys are backwards compatible with older standards like wireless B. You just won't have the higher transfer rate that an all "G" wireless setup will give you.
