What does a raw ruby look like

Details

I have heard cases of people just strolling along and finding precious stones such as rubys on the ground in some areas prone to them...How do you differentiate precious stones like these from other non gemstones when they all look pretty dirty on the surface?

Gemstones in their natural state are called "rough" not 'raw' ;)

Would have thought it was pretty unlikely to have raw gemstones just sitting around on the ground waiting to be discovered...but I guess it must happen occasionally. The bulk of decent sized gemstones would be buried most probably.

Raw ruby's are still pretty distinctive and pretty hard to miss if they were sitting on the surface in amongst "lesser" rocks. They definitely have a pinkish reddish crystalline look to them and are sometimes embedded in other rock fragments. Like most gemstones they don't look nearly as impressive raw as when they are cut and polished though.
