What is the difference between affect and effect

Details

These 2 are always getting me confused and I tend to always use "effect" more often because its more familiar to me, even though it probably isn't the right one to use all the time.

Someone picked up on my misuse last week and I want some clarification with examples if possible please.

Affect is a verb and effect is a noun. You "affect" something. The results are the "effects".
