Why is a 200 year old piece of music still copyrighted

Details

Why can't classical music be downloaded free, when the songs are clearly past any copyright law time period? Shouldn't they like old book texts be free to download too?

The performance of the actual classical recording would most likely be owned by a record company, even if the original piece of was written hundreds of years ago.

So it's slightly different from downloading the text of a very old book that is now part of the "public domain"
